After a week-long testimony by renowned US-based Economist, Prof. John Burke, the first-ever recording of opinions of a foreign expert using high-speed Internet in Indian medico-legal history ended on Monday (May 2, 2011). Prof. Burke expressed opinion in support of the highest compensation in Indian medical history (Rs. 78 crore plus applicable interests since 1998) claimed by Dr. Kunal Saha for the wrongful death of his wife, Anuradha Saha. The Supreme Court of India has already held three senior Kolkata doctors (Sukumar Mukherjee, Baidyanath Halder and Balaram Prasad) and Advanced Medicare Research Institute (AMRI) responsible for Anuradha’s death and remanded the case back to the National Consumers’ Forum (NCDRC) only for determination of the quantum of compensation. With all pleadings now completed, the historic Anuradha death case now waits for final argument and verdict.
