West Bengal Medical Council Stalls Election: No Funds from State Government

In a shocking revelation, Mr. D.K. Ghosh, Registrar of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has informed PBT president that although election to form a new Council should have occurred last year, this election is “stalled due to non-receipt of adequate fund from the State Government” (see Mr. Ghosh’s letter below). Thus, the present members of WBMC have no moral or legal right to run the medical council because their term already ended last year. Ironically, the president (Dr. Ashok Chowdhury) and most members of the WBMC have retained their posts in the medical council for the past 12 years or longer. As PBT has always claimed that the election in the WBMC (and most state medical councils in India) is nothing but a sham with handful of politically-motivated doctors win years and years through botched up elections without any knowledge of the vast majority of the electorates (registered doctors). Dr. Ketan Desai also remained as the chief of both Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) and Medical Council of India (MCI) years after years through similar botched up elections. The revelation by Mr. Ghosh underscores this long-held notion that elections in the medical councils are nothing but frauds.
