After forcing the Medical Council of India (MCI) to cancel the license of the corrupt and criminally indicted ex-head of MCI, Dr. Ketan Desai, PBT continued to fight the WMA leaders for remove Dr. Desai from the “president-elect” of the international medical body. The WMA was scheduled to hand over the presidentship to Dr. Desai during their annual meeting at Vancouver, Canada between October 13 and 16, 2010. While some members of the WMA including their secretary-general from Germany, Dr. Otmar Kloiber, staunchly fought to put Dr. Desai as the next WMA president, under tremendous pressure from our organization, the WMA eventually backed out from making Dr. Desai as their next president. PBT called for a boycott of the WMA conference in Vancouver unless they removed Dr. Desai. In fact, Dr. Desai eventually cancelled his participation in the WMA conference in Vancouver. However, he managed to send three of his closest cronies [Indian Medical Association (IMA) president Dr. S. Samaran, IMA Secretary Dr. Dharam Prakash and ex-IMA president Dr. Ajay Kumar) to the Vancouver conference at a huge expense of taxpayers’ money (IMA is funded by the Indian government].
PBT has lodged a formal complaint to the Indian Health Minister to investigate how these Desai-supporters managed to travel to Canada at the expense of taxpayers’ money (click here to see PBT’s complaint). PBT president, Dr. Kunal Saha, has also written on this recent sordid episode of Dr. Ketan Desai and WMA which is published online by the British Medical Journal(BMJ Online (Oct. 14, 2010)).
