Disgraced ex-MCI president, Dr. Ketan Desai, was reappointed as the chief of Urology in the B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad earlier this month despite his license to practice medicine still suspended by the MCI. Dr. Desai was caught red-handed by the CBI while taking bribe from a private medical college in 2010. After spending almost seven months in jail, Dr. Desai is free on bail waiting for the criminal trial to start facing serious charges of bribery and corruption. Following Dr. Desai’s arrest by CBI, PBT president Dr. Kunal Saha lodged complaint of professional misconduct against Dr. Desai. MCI summarily suspended Dr. Desai’s license to practice medicine pending full investigation (see MCI order dated 9th Oct., 2010 below). Under mounting public pressure, Gujarat Government also fired Dr. Desai from his post of head of department (HOD) of Urology at the B.J. Medical College.
The complaint against Dr. Desai is still pending before MCI and as such, his license to practice medicine still remains suspended. Shockingly, Gujarat Government decided to reinstate Dr. Desai to his old post clearly indicating cronies of Dr. Desai are still pulling all the strings to bring him back to the helm of Indian medicine. Dr. Saha has submitted a formal complaint with the MCI today urging the Board of Governors (BOG) to take immediate measures to remove Dr. Desai from B.J. Medical College and also to initiate criminal prosecution of Dr. Desai for practicing medicine with a suspended license.
