Update: It is just learnt from NDTV that due to some unavoidable circumstances, the program on “medical negligence” will NOT be aired this Sunday (July 14, 2015). It will be broadcast perhaps next Sunday.
The vital issue of “medical negligence” will be the topic of a panel discussion in NDTV in the popular show “We The People” hosted by renowned journalist Ms. Barkha Dutt. It is reported that the program will also focus on the momentous judgment passed last week by Calcutta High Court when 17 doctor-members of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) were directed to stand trial for “criminal conspiracy” (punishable under IPC Section 120b) and “screening offender” (punishable under IPC Section 201) for deliberately shielding the doctors who were responsible for the wrongful death of Anuradha Saha, wife of PBT president Dr. Kunal Saha. Ironically, the main culprit physician, Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee, was appointed as the “chief adviser” for the Bengal government by chief minister Mamata Banerjee in 2011 even after he was found grossly negligent by the Supreme Court and his medical registration was also directed to be canceled by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for causing Anuradha’s death. Dr. Mukherjee still remains as the “chief adviser” for the health department. While the Apex Court held the four top Kolkata doctors including Dr. Mukherjee and AMRI Hospital responsible for Anuradha’s death in 2009, final verdict by the Supreme Court for the compensation to be paid by the Kolkata doctors/hospital is expected any day now as hearing in this historic medical negligence case was concluded in May just before the Apex Court went on recess for the summer.
