Calcutta High Court Considers PIL Against Mamta Banerjee For Appointing Convicted Doctor As “Chief Adviser”

A division bench of Justices Mr. K.J. Sengupta and Mr. A.K. Mondal of Calcutta High Court heard PIL filed by PBT president Dr. Kunal Saha against appointment of Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee as the “chief adviser” for the West Bengal Health Department on Wednesday (August 8).  This unprecedented PIL was filed against Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, for her deliberate and contemptuous act of putting Dr. Mukherjee to the highest post in state healthcare despite his conviction by the Supreme Court which found him guilty for reckless therapy and “sheer ignorance” which eventually caused death of Dr. Saha’s wife and US-based child psychologist, Anuradha Saha, who died during from an astronomical overdose of steroids during a social visit to India in 1998.  The High Court directed Dr. Saha, who argued the case personally, to make the state government a party in this PIL.  The case would be taken up for contested hearing on August 16, 2012 (see the news below).
