The leaders of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and many other medical groups have erupted in massive protest over a TV program Satyamev Jayate hosted by actor Amir Khan yesterday where the shabby status of healthcare regulation in India was shown in an explicit manner with a focus on the pervasive corruption in the Medical Council of India (MCI) including the recent arrest of the disgraced ex-MCI president, Dr. Ketan Desai. The program also featured many victims of “medical negligence” and showed a striking difference in healthcare regulation between India and Western countries. Even the present MCI head, Dr. K.K. Talwar, was a featured guest in the program who had to admit the presence of medical corruption under some tough questioning by Mr. Amir Khan. However, the program also candidly admitted that while corruption has been plaguing the medical community in India, many good doctors are still trying to do the right thing and helping the patients selflessly. The entire program may be viewed at this link http://www.satyamevjayate.in/issue04/videos/1Lg0kUtS8ic/.
There is no denying about the increase in the incidence of “medical negligence” and the deep decay in moral values in healthcare in the recent years. Rise of corrupt doctors like Ketan Desai to the top of Indian medicine bears irrefutable proof about the deplorable status of the medical regulatory system in India. There can be no argument that without overt as well as covert support from other unscrupulous medicos, Dr. Ketan Desai could never have remained at the helm of MCI for almost two decades. While facing a criminal trial before the CBI court, Dr. Desai is still being backed by many medical leaders to make a return to regain control of Indian healthcare. In fact, Dr. Desai was recently elected to the Gujarat University Senate “unopposed” by any doctors in Gujarat. PBT is the only organization which is fighting Dr. Desai in Gujarat High Court and Supreme Court of India. No medical group in India ever came forward against Dr. Desai in any court since his arrest by CBI in 2010. Why Indian medical leaders are now upset with Mr. Amir Khan for telling the truth? Unless Indian medicos make honest introspection of their inherent problems and come forward to tackle the pervasive corruption hiding in the medical community, public trust for our healers is not going to be restored.
